In Access we often talk about following the energy or asking a question to determine what feels light and what feels heavy, with the response that feels light being the yes answer and the response that feels heavy being the no answer. Some of us feel this concept more as expansion vs. contraction. For me, it has always been easier to feel yes as expansion and no as contraction.
If you are not familiar with expansion and contraction you can try this:
Think of a moment that made you feel happy and joyous, easy and fun. That is expansion. Expansion is when everything feels easy, you have a curiosity, and life is juicy and exciting.
Now think of a moment that made you feel like giving up; where you felt wrong or judged by others, or you were judging yourself. Everything about that situation made you feel like you would never be happy again; you felt blocked by one obstacle after another and wondered how you would ever get out of it. Those kinds of moments are contraction. Moments of contraction exists anywhere you are not being the infinite being you truly be.
Who you really are exists in the expansion, all the rest is not you. Good questions to ask yourself when you feel heavy, contracted, or things are just not fun are:
Who am I being?
Who does this belong to?
If I were truly being me, who would I be?
If I were truly being me, where would I be?
If I were truly being me, when would I be?
If I were truly being me, why would I be?
You don’t have to have an answer right away, it may just show up as an awareness or energy. 99% of all feelings, emotions, and even body symptoms are not yours. You can say, “ Return to sender with awareness attached.” if you find you are not being you.
Sometimes following what is light or expansive for you may seem totally illogical. Try asking the following questions in these moments instead of going into conclusion:
What would my life be in 5 years if I choose this?
What would my life be in 5 years if I don’t choose this?
You can even use these questions for everyday small things like, “Body, would you like to eat this? Body, what would you like to wear? Body, how would you like to move?”
Oftentimes when we are ready to follow even the illogical choices, things start to show up as if by magic. One choice might lead to something you could never have calculated, planned, or computed. Imagine having a sudden desire to go and get a cup of coffee, even if logically you should use the time to work on something else. What if you choose to get that cup of coffee anyway and run into a friend at the coffee shop who introduces you to their companion? What if that companion gets really interested in what you are doing, and you end up with a new client, or schedule a new class, or something new gets created? These moments are the wonderful events that start to show up, as if by magic, when you come out of conclusions and computations, and follow what is light or expansive for you. Imagine what joyous adventures you can have!
It’s also useful to have a big dose of curiosity. To be curious you have to be willing to be vulnerable enough to make mistakes, but it doesn’t matter if your curiosity doesn’t create what you desire; just choose again, and again, and again… Our choices create awareness, so how is that ever failing?
Good playmates in this curious magical journey of your life are:
How does it get any better than this?
What else is truly possible?
What choices do you have that other people do not have?
What are you aware of?
What do you know that you are pretending not to know, that if you would acknowledge that you do know would change everything?
